The Constitution Quest is a fun way for adults and families to learn important facts about the Constitution, our form of limited government, and the unalienable rights we enjoy as citizens. My family plays it regularly and my children have learned more by playing it than by all of my lectures and writings. It is a double blessing to enjoy family time and engage the children on a subject so vital to their future happiness. Two thumbs way, way up!

Scaffolding with Constitution Quest: Using the "Novice Cards" to Begin Game Play

As the creators of The Constitution Quest Game, we at Cognitive Square, Inc. are always thinking of ways to enhance learning by applying proven educational strategies in the design and use of our products. Our Constitution Quest Game has been field tested with players age 10 through age 84 with great success! We have also found that an educational strategy known as “scaffolding” provides best results for younger players age 7-10, and makes it easier for adults with little constitutional knowledge. "Scaffolding" provides steps for learners to access the information in a gradual way, just as a painter might use a scaffold to help reach a higher level. This is also true when learning new content. To access the more complex information, we take small steps by learning the simplest concepts first, in order to build a foundation and promote successful learning.

For students ages 7, 8, 9, and 10, we suggest that the “novice cards” (these are mixed within the regular 5 decks and marked with a star) are removed from the numbered order in each deck, and placed on the top of the deck, so those cards will be drawn first. These "novice cards" have the least amount of verbiage and the content of these cards is simpler to grasp for the younger students or players with little Constitutional knowledge.

REMOVE THE “NOVICE CARDS” (cards marked with a star) FROM EACH DECK, AND THEN PLACE THEM ON TOP OF THE DECK:

After each card is played, place the card on the bottom of the deck. When the game is over, put those cards, that have been previously played, back on top. Then place the deck in the plastic bag provided, so the decks are ready for the next time the game is played. This will give the players another opportunity to answer those same questions on the next round, which provides repetition, thus maximizing the learning experience.

If we can answer any further questions, please don't hesitate to call us. We’d be happy to share how successfully Constitution Quest can be utilized in the classroom! We also encourage an adult or older player to "partner" with the younger student, forming a team. Partnering gives parents, grandparents, and teachers, great opportunity to model critical thinking as well as appropriate ways to be a good winner and loser. Proven strategies that promote learning and retention are woven into the game play, as well as elements of chance, so that even the person with little Constitutional knowledge can have fun playing with someone with a greater Constitutional IQ.

Thanks for spreading Constitutional Literacy!
